All University car parks are pay and display and charges £1.50 per hour. Parking permits are available at £2.50 when pre – ordered and pre paid via the UniSpace Sales office on 0191 5152666.

All University of Sunderland car parks are clearly signposted from the road. They are also identified on the Map of Sunderland and University Campuses.

Directions to the City Campus

For City Campus: head east along A1231 and follow signs for City Centre. Continue over Queen Alexandra Bridge and then bear left following signs for City Centre/A1231. Continue past B&Q to the third roundabout where you should take the third exit, following signs for University.

There are five car parks on City Campus.

The car park at The Travel Hub on Wharncliffe Street, between the Sciences Complex and CitySpace, is designated as Visitor Parking only.

Directions to the Sir Tom Cowie Campus

For the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's and the National Glass Centre: From North or South, follow the A19 towards Sunderland. Leave the A19 and turn onto the A1231 heading for Sunderland. Head east along A1231 and follow the brown directional signs for the National Glass Centre which is located within the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s.

The Sir Tom Cowie Campus has two large car parks: one next to the Reg Vardy Centre, and one next to The David Goldman Informatics Centre.

Directions to The Industry Centre

For The Industry Centre: From North or South, follow the A19 towards Sunderland. Leave the A19 and turn onto the A1231 heading for Sunderland. Head east along A1231 and follow the signs for Enterprise Park West. At the 2nd roundabout turn right onto Colima Avenue, The Industry Centre is on your left.

Travelling by Train

Sunderland has a well-connected national rail service. Grand Central trains www.grandcentralrail.co.uk operate a direct daily service from London Kings Cross to Sunderland, the average journey time is approximately 3 hours and 50 minutes.

East Coast operates services from London Kings Cross to Newcastle with an average journey time of 3 hours.  There are regular local main line services from Newcastle Central Station, Durham, Carlisle, Hexham and Middlesbrough. Further details on all services can be obtained at www.nationalrailenquiries.co.uk

The METRO links Newcastle Central Station with Sunderland in 30 minutes.  You can download a metro map and plan your journey at www.nexus.org

If your destination is The Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's, or the National Glass Centre, then alight at the St Peter's station and follow the signposts to St Peter’s Campus which would take approximately 10 minutes to walk. A taxi from St Peter’s Station would cost about £3.50 to The National Glass Centre or St Peter’s Campus.  For City Campus, alight at the University station where you will reach the heart of the Campus within a few minutes walking.

If you are travelling to The Industry Centre, a travel company called ‘Simply Go’ operate a regular bus service, details of current bus timetables can be found via www.simplygo.com. Buses travelling from the Park Lane Interchange take approximately 20 minutes. There are no rail links from Park Lane Interchange to The Industry Centre. A taxi would charge approximately £6.00.

 

Travelling by Air

Newcastle International Airport is the closest airport to the University of Sunderland.

In addition to budget airlines, British Airways and other International Carriers operate regular services.

There is a Metro station at the airport which allows quick and easy travel to and from the airport, the journey time to Sunderland is approximately 1 hour.

Arriving at Durham Tees Valley Airport, local rail services from Darlington station will get you to Sunderland in approximately 1 hour.
